Dr. Zimbalist received her PhD in medieval literature from the University of California, Davis, in 2013. She earned her M.A. in English Literature from San Diego State University and holds B.A. degrees in English and Music History from San José State University. During her time as a Fulbright Scholar to Belgium and recipient of the Belgian American Educational Foundation Fellowship, Barbara was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Antwerp’s Ruusbroec Institute and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Liège, where she completed archival research in support of her dissertation on medieval women’s religious literature. Her research interests include comparative medieval studies; manuscript studies and book history; high- and late-medieval religious cultures; and the intersection of critical theory and medieval studies in contemporary scholarship. Barbara has published on Middle English devotional literature, medieval Flemish mysticism, and Anglo-Norman hagiography. Her work compares translation and textual production in women’s visionary texts from medieval England and the Low Countries, and she is researching a future project tracing the manuscript culture of dynastic genealogy in late-medieval England.
